Editor-in-Chief BETSYLEW R. MIALE-GIX received her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Washington School of Law in 1984. Throughout her legal career, Ms. Miale-Gix has devoted her experience, expertise and knowledge to representing persons injured by the wrongful acts of others. She has practiced general civil litigation and personal injury law, as both defense and plaintiff counsel.

Ms. Miale-Gix has contributed articles to the publication "The Advocate", and was co-editor of the educational pamphlet "Common Legal Terms in a Personal Injury Case". She speaks at legal seminars on issues of law and practice, including topics ranging from Voir Dire in a Traumatic Brain Injury case to HIPAA, Presentation of Damages at Trial, Personal Injury Protection Issues, and Colossus, among others. Ms. Miale-Gix was responsible for new case law extending UIM/UM coverage in Washington State to include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a physical injury in the seminal case of Trinh v. Allstate.

Ms. Miale-Gix is an active member of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, serving as past Co-Chair of the Women of WSTLA section, and currently on the CLE and Legislative committees. She has been nominated for and has accepted an offer to serve on the WSTLA Board of Governors. Other professional associations include the American Trial Lawyers Association, as well as the Washington State and Snohomish County Bar Associations.


Richard H. Adler is an honors graduate of Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1980.

As an attorney and managing partner for the law offices of Adler Giersch PS, Mr. Adler’s legal practice is exclusively dedicated to representing victims of injuries in personal injury and insurance law claims.

Mr. Adler’s extensive legal and medical knowledge is widely recognized. He authored Whiplash, Spinal Trauma and the Personal Injury Case; Medical Aspects of Soft Tissue Injuries; and Survival Guide:  Chiropractic Practice Guidelines.

Mr. Adler co-produced several educational and instructional videos for doctors on testifying at deposition and trial, with attorney, Paul Giersch, and Dr. Dan Murphy, DC, DABCO. Mr. Adler writes and edits the law firm’s monthly newsletter, “The Advocate”, which focuses on various medical/legal/insurance aspects of personal injury claims. Frequently, he lectures on personal injury and insurance law to chiropractors, medical doctors, attorneys, physical therapists, massage therapists, and psychologists.

Mr. Adler is licensed to practice in federal court and is a participating member of the Washington Bar Association, Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, and Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Mr. Adler serves as Chair of the Executive Board of the Brain Injury Association of Washington. He also enjoys music, a glass of red wine, travel, and time with his two daughters and spouse.


John R. Alexander received his Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law in 1977. He is a 1974 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. He is licensed to practice law in Washington and California. Mr. Alexander entered private practice in 1982 and has represented personal injury victims exclusively since 1984. He joined  Adler Giersch PS in 1993. Mr. Alexander has represented clients in over 75 jury trials and has served as an arbitrator numerous times in personal injury matters.

Mr. Alexander has served as an instructor for the People’s Law School, which provides legal information to community members. As a member of the Judicial Relations Committee of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, he works actively to promote adequate funding of the judicial system to assure access and justice for citizens of Washington State. Mr. Alexander is responsible for the successful Adler Giersch PS annual blood drive for Puget Sound Blood Center. In addition to an active family life, Mr. Alexander has an interest in classic cars and is the owner of a refurbished 1952 Chevrolet two door hard top coupe.

Kathy Bell, MD

Kathleen R. Bell, M.D. is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and has been the Medical Director of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Rehabilitation at the University of Washington Medical Center since l996. She attended Temple University Medical School and completed a residency at the University of Washington in Rehabilitation Medicine. She also completed a NIHR Switzer Fellowship, studying cortical control of motor activity. For 20 years, she has concentrated her clinical care, teaching, and research in the area of TBI in a variety of settings. She has been the Project Director for the UW TBI Model System for the past three years and previously the Co-Project Director. Her research interests have included efficacy of rehabilitation interventions, sleep and pain disorders in TBI, the treatment of depression after TBI, and medical education. She is the Principal Investigator for a Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded study on telephone interventions and follow-up in mild TBI and is conducting a multi-center study on telephone intervention in moderate to severe TBI, funded by NIDRR. Dr. Bell is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation. In addition, Dr. Bell has been an invited participant in the CDC Experts Panel on Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and serves on the Executive Board of the Brain Injury Association of Washington as its Education Coordinator.

Kristin Cruse

Kristin Cruse joined the Executive Board for the Brain Injury Association of Washington as its Event Coordinator in April 2005. Ms. Cruse works for the personal injury law firm of Adler Giersch, PS as the Public Relations Coordinator while she pursues her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington. Her assistance with word processing and transcription has been invaluable.

Bill Nelson

Bill Nelson is the Information and Resources Coordinator for the Brain Injury Association of Washington. He is also a key staff person in the BIAWA office, disseminating information on brain injury via fax, telephone and email to all who need it. Bill is the wise, reassuring voice on the BIAWA phone when people in trouble call for help and for answers. Bill is also a brain injury survivor.

Julie Seserko

Julie Seserko is the office manager for the Brain Injury Association of Washington. As a brain injury survivor and BIAWA Member, Julie brings expertise and compassion to her work. Prior to Ms. Seserko’s TBI, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington and was employed for 17 years as a Vice President of Bank of America.

Gary Stobbe, MD

Gary Stobbe, M.D. is a Board Certified Neurologist sub-specializing in the fields of cognitive and behavioral neurology. Dr. Stobbe earned a BS in psychobiology from UCLA in 1985, and his MD from Albany Medical College in 1989. He completed his neurology residency at UCLA-West LA VA Medical Center in 1993 where he was mentored by world-renowned behavioralists Jeff Cummings and Frank Benson. He opened his private neurology practice in Washington in 1993, and is currently a member of the University of Washington clinical faculty and Seattle Neuroscience Institute at Swedish Medical Center. He has participated as principal investigator in numerous clinical studies, and has developed special interests in the fields of multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and autism. In addition to his neurology private practice, Dr. Stobbe is Founder and Medical Director of the Autism Spectrum Treatment and Research (ASTAR) Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing data-driven comprehensive treatment and clinical research in the field of autism spectrum disorders.

Jay Uomoto, PhD

Jay Uomoto, Ph.D., or as his patients and staff refer to him as “Dr. J”, is currently a rehabilitation and neuropsychologist for the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, WA. He works in the Polytrauma Program and the Rehabilitation Service Care Line at the VAPSHCS. He has held academic and clinical positions at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Shepherd Center Acquired Brain Injury Program, Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and Seattle Pacific University. He maintains a private neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology practice, and has a passion for playing guitar and keyboards.

Michael Weinstein, MD

Michael Weinstein, M.D. is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Virginia Mason Medical Center since 1986. He is the medical director of the Clinic for Performing Artists, Neurorehabilitation programs and Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. He has served as the president of the Washington State Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Chairperson for the Washington State Hospital Medical Staff Society, Board of Governors of the Performing Artists Medical Association, and Board of Directors of the King County Medical Society. Volunteer activities include memberships on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association’s Ten State Affiliate as well as the board of the Metro King County region, and the Board of Trustees of the Northwest Chamber Orchestra. He has been consistently recognized by his peers in “Guide to America’s Top Physicians,” “Best Doctors in America,” and “Seattle Magazine’s Top Doctors.”

Valerie Wootton

Valerie Wootton has been a member of the Brain Injury Association of Washington since 1998 and was recently appointed to its Executive Board as its Support Group Coordinator. She has been on the TBI Advisory Board of Washington since 2000, serving as Secretary for two terms. She also served on the Washington Protection and Advocacy TBI Ad Hoc Committee for two years. Valerie began advocating for her son, Paul, a brain injury survivor, in 1997. Paul passed away in 2002 and Valerie’s commitment to helping TBI survivors and their families remains strong. She views the support groups as a great place to receive emotional support, participate in social activities, have access to current information and resources and share experiences with others.

Ray Baker, MD is an anesthesiologist specializing in spine related interventions at Washington Interventional Spine Associates in Bellevue, WA. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of the Interventional Pain Service at the University of Washington, Department of Anesthesiology. He actively participates in the advancement of spine medicine by directing injection courses, lecturing, and publishing and editing numerous books and papers.

Shelley Cathrea, DC practices chiropractic within Integrative Health Partners, in the Cabrini Medical Tower in Seattle, WA. It is a multi-disciplinary clinic, with a patient-centered approach to care. She received her bachelor’s degree in Physical and Health Education at the University of Toronto and her doctor of chiropractic from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland. Her  primary focus is spine and extremity adjustment, combined with exercise and nutritional therapies.

Jeffrey P. Clark, BSc, DC practices at  Lake Stevens Chiropractic Clinic, Lake Stevens, Washington. A chiropractor for adults and children, Dr. Clark travels nationally and internationally promoting Chiropractic Wellness Care. A two-term past President of the East King County Chiropractic Society, Dr. Clark has been in private practice in Washington State since 1991.

Michael W. Downey, DC has practiced chiropractic in Bellevue for 19 years. He is a student of Dan Murphy, DC and Burl Pettibon, DC, utilizing biomechanics adjusting techniques. His practice has an emphasis on whiplash and spinal trauma. In 2000, he was named in Seattle Magazine as one of the “Top Doctors”.

Shawn Gay, DC opened Arlington Family Chiropractic Clinic in 1999. He is a 1998 graduate of Life Chiropractic College West of Hayward, California. Dr. Gay is an active member of the Washington State Chiropractic Association.

Aaron Ilk, DC earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1998 from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon. Since then, his practice in Bellevue, Washington has focused on injuries from auto collisions, sports injuries, and the education of patients in posture and work place ergonomics.

Douglas Jacobsmeyer, DC graduated Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa in 1980. For 13 years his practice was located in Arlington, Washington. His current practice is in Mount Vernon, Washington. Dr. Jacobsmeyer has been a consultant for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries for 19 years and has served as an Independent Chiropractic Examiner for seven years.

Craig London, PT is co-owner and manager of Olympic Physical Therapy of  Everett, Washington,  where he specializes in musculoskeletal physical therapy. Olympic Physical Therapy is committed to its patients to provide the best physical therapy care with highly skilled staff. Mr. London is a 1973 graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

Philip J. Mease, MD is a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Chief of Swedish Hospital Rheumatology Clinical Research Division, and conducts clinical practice with Seattle Rheumatology Associates. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Stanford University. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he was subsequently Chief Resident and Fellow in Rheumatology.

Michael Meier, DC received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Iowa and graduated Cum Laude from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He  practices chiropractic, combined with nutritional counseling in Everett, Washington.

John S. Miller, DC, DACBR graduated summa cum laude from Western States Chiropractic College. He is a former chairman of the Department of Radiology at Parker College of Chiropractic and a former faculty member of Palmer College of Chiropractic-West. His published papers include original cervical spine research and a number of case studies. Dr. Miller is currently director of a radiology lab in Seattle and the senior faculty member in Radiology at Bastyr University.

Matt Miller, DC practices chiropractor in North Bend, Washington. He operates a general practice chiropractic clinic that features a massage therapist and special fitness programs designed for golfers. His philosophy of  treatment of patients is to heal with simple, conservative measures and to promote wellness.

Donald W. Olson, DC, FASBE, DACS is in the clinical practice of chiropractic in Auburn, Washington. He serves on local, national and international committees regarding issues of chiropractic care.

Mark Ombrellaro, MD is a vascular surgeon in private practice in Bellevue Washington. He is the author of over 30 scientific articles and book chapters regarding all aspects of vascular surgery, including stroke prevention, thoracic outlet syndrome, and advances in aortic aneurysm treatments. His special interest is new technologies in vascular surgery and endovascular therapy.

Richard D. Swetman, DC is a chiropractor practicing in Stanwood, Washington. He is a graduate of Western States Chiropractic College and has been practiced chiropractic since 1985. Besides doing manual adjusting of the spine, he uses extremity adjusting, cranial adjusting, and various musculoskeletal techniques as adjunct therapies to facilitate the body’s healing. He was an All-American gymnast at Penn State University. His athletic background, combined with his chiropractic expertise, gives him a deeper understanding of the self-healing capacities of the human body.

Jack Teague, PT is a principal with Northshore Physical Therapy in Bothell, Washington. Mr. Teague treats sports injuries, industrial injuries, personal injuries, auto collision injuries, and chronic pain, and has done so for the past 20 years.

Diana L. Thompson, LMP has been a licensed massage practitioner in her private practice on Capitol Hill for over 20 years. She treats acute and chronic neuro-musculoskeletal and lymphatic disorders. She is the author of  “Hands Heal: Communication, Documentation and Insurance Billing for Manual Therapists” and lectures at massage, midwifery, chiropractic, physician and physical therapy conferences across the country.
